Spin Master Aqua Dots Recall: Reports of Serious Injuries
Parents are always looking for the types of toys available that will not only keep their little ones occupied and having fun, but also for those that will provide an opportunity for mental development by way of interaction, creativity and anticipation of completing the process of ‘making the toys work.
One of those products is known by consumers as Aqua Dots, and these bead sets are manufactured and distributed by a company known as Spin Master, which is based in Toronto, Canada. Below is a look at the product, what it’s meant to provide, how it’s used and an unfortunate recap of reports of serious problems that have arisen with the product.
Aqua Dots are sold as a kit, and within these kits are
several ‘tools’ for
completing jewelry. Specifically, each unit is sold with a supply of beads
and thread to put the completed strings of beads together. Accessories
that are available include a drying fan, an applicator pen, design templates
for different ‘types’ of jewelry and a spray bottle that’s
supposed to be filled with water.
Children will use the kit to design and build their own unique pieces of jewelry, and when their design is complete, the beads are fused together by spraying them with water, providing a long-lasting piece of jewelry that can be worn as an accessory.
The Problem Aqua Dots and GHB
Recently, reports have surfaced that should be extremely troubling for parents. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has received two complaints in particular, and these complaints have prompted the company to initiate a recall of the Aqua Dots product line in order to prevent additional damage.
The crux of the problem is that a chemical reaction takes place when the beads are sprayed with water in order to fuse them together, and the children at issue here both swallowed a large amount of these beads. Unfortunately, the children who swallowed the beads reportedly became violently ill immediately, and symptoms included repetitive vomiting, seizures and ultimately a comatose state. Neither of the two children died as a result of this issue.
