Rottweiler Attacks
Rottweiler Attacks
Rottweilers are one of the oldest and most popular breeds of companion and working dogs. Their lineage dates back to the days before the Roman Empire, where these stout and powerful dogs traveled with the Legions and helped them manage livestock. These dogs evolved from simple cattle herding dogs into the Rottweilers we know today.
Unfortunately, many of the tendencies that made the Rottweilers prized working dogs such as their strength, tenacity, and size are the same factors that make them dangerous today. According to statistics provided by the Center for Disease Control, Rottweilers were responsible for 39 fatal attacks between 1979 and 1998, second only to Pit Bulls but ahead of German Shepards.
There are many factors that can lead Rottweilers to attack people, but due to the long history of the breed as herding and protection dogs, they often have to fight thousands of years of instinct when confronted with confusing situations. Furthermore, they need early training and exposure to other dogs to prevent them from developing dangerous personality “quirks.”
The reality is that even the best Rottweilers are strong enough to inflict significant harm and damage should they become agitated. Even with training and socialization, Rottweilers are still one of the most likely dogs to attack a person. Their powerful jaws and muscular bodies are easily capable of causing significant long-term injury and could even lead to a tragic death.
