Chinese Drywall Destroying American Homes

The American home market has taken an extreme beating in recent months, and property values have dropped precipitously.  As a result, homeowners with a tenuous hold on their mortgages and any equity that remains in their properties did not need to hear the news that homes in Florida and Virginia are being destroyed by defective Chinese drywall.

At the foundation of this problem is the fact that during the early part of this decade, the housing boom across the United States led many builders down the faulty path of rushing jobs in order to meet demand and cutting corners to get there.  One of the corners cut appears to have been the use of questionable drywall that was imported from China.

The parties who are alleged to be at fault for this serious problem include German drywall maker Knauf Gips KG, its Chinese plasterboard units and several U.S. homebuilders who used the materials in order to complete the buildings.  The problems being caused by this drywall are numerous, and the damages that have resulted are substantial in nature.

Specifically, the most prominent complaint involves the first sign that a problem has arisen with the drywall.  This complaint is the sometimes noxious smell of rotten eggs and/or sulfur, which has literally driven many people from their homes given that this odor emanates from within the walls of their interior rooms.

Additionally, several serious structural problems have arisen due to the use of this drywall, each of which can lead to several thousand dollars in repair costs.  These problems include:

  • Corrosion of air cooling coils
  • Deteriorating wiring
  • Corrosion of heating vents
  • Corroding plumbing
  • Rotting of walls

All of these structures should last for decades according to most acceptable building codes, but all of these homes suffered severe damage after a much shorter period of time.  As a result, defective building products attorneys are beginning to take inquiries from prospective clients, and others have already filed lawsuits against any or all of the entities in question.

One working theory regarding the process by which this drywall was defective was because the shipment of drywall sat at sea for an unreasonable amount of time waiting to be approved for importation.  As a result, the atmosphere damaged the structural aspects of the products, but the companies at issue continued to use it in their buildings.

If you have suffered as a result of this defective product line, you need to take action now.  Contact a defective products attorney as soon as possible to schedule a free initial consultation so that you can obtain an understanding of your legal rights and options.
