Bayer Diabetes Care Contour Test Strips FDA Recall:
Millions of people around the world live every day with diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that requires constant management, and any slip in this vigilance could create a situation of extreme danger in short order. For decades, the most common way for diabetics to maintain their health and viability was to administer daily insulin injections, as insulin is the substance that's usually produced in the body that's in short supply in every diabetic for one reason or another.
In recent years, remarkable advancements have been made in regards to diabetes medication and management, and one of the leading companies in this industry is Bayer Diabetes Care. Bayer has long been an innovator in terms of new products and medications that aid the patient in both the management and treatment of diabetes, and in recent years a new product, known as the Contour TS Blood Glucose Meter, was released onto the market to help diabetics monitor their blood sugar levels.
An ancillary product to the Contour TS Blood Glucose Meter is a set of 'test' strips that are meant to be used in conjunction with the meter in order to take accurate and immediate measurements of a patient's blood sugar level. These strips are painless to apply and relatively inexpensive to purchase, and the results in general have been extremely positive.
However, the test strips have come under recent scrutiny, and on December 21, 2007, the FDA announced on its Web site that Bayer Diabetes Care had initiated a voluntary recall of several lots of these test strips due to serious problems they were encountering. Specifically, these strips were providing inaccurate blood sugar level readings to patients, and the range of inaccuracy was between 5% and 17% too high.
When a diabetic thinks that his or her blood sugar levels are too high, immediate corrective action must be taken, usually in the form of an intake of insulin. However, too much insulin in the system is problematic for anyone, especially diabetics, which is why the product has been recalled.
If you or someone you love has been using this product, discontinue using the strips immediately and seek a full medical evaluation to diagnose any problems that may have arisen as a result of their malfunction. You should also contact a defective products attorney as soon as possible in order to gain an understanding of your legal rights and options.
Recall Specifics
On December 27, 2007, the FDA published a notice on its Web site that Bayer Diabetes Care was initiating a voluntary recall of several lots of its 'test strips' that were tied to its main diabetes management component, known as the Contour TS Blood Glucose Meter. The specific text of the press release can be found here, and it should be noted that no issue has been identified with the meter itself - only the strips that are used with it.
Below are the necessary specifics of the recall, but if you've been harmed as a result of using these test strips, contact your doctor to schedule an immediate medical evaluation in order to determine if any problem has arisen as a result of using them, and then contact a defective products attorney as soon as possible to schedule an initial consultation.
