FDA NEWS UPDATE on BOTOX for February 8, 2008.

FDA issued an early communication about an ongoing safety review regarding Botox and Botox Cosmetic.

FDA has received reports of systemic adverse reactions including respiratory compromise and death following the use of botulinum toxins types A and B for both FDA-approved and unapproved uses. The reactions reported are suggestive of botulism, which occurs when botulinum toxin spreads in the body beyond the site where it was injected. The most serious cases had outcomes that included hospitalization and death, and occurred mostly in children treated for cerebral palsy-associated limb spasticity. Use of botulinum toxins for treatment of limb spasticity (severe arm and leg muscle spasms) in children or adults is not an approved use in the U.S. See the FDA's "Early Communication about an Ongoing Safety Review" for Agency recommendations and additional information for healthcare professionals.

-------------------------END OF BOTOX FDA WARNING-----------------------------

Botox is a substance that’s actually a common name for the actual substance, which is known in scientific circles as botulinum toxin.  In its pure form, botulinum toxin is a dangerous, toxic substance that can lead to the terrible condition known as botulism.  If a person is exposed to this substance in the wrong way, serious, even life-threatening consequences can be the near-term result.

This toxin has actually been in use for medical reasons for decades, and in the past it was used to treat such conditions as lazy eye and wry neck, and it showed generally positive results.  Given its qualities, researchers began to look for other ways in which botulinum toxin could be used for the benefit of other conditions.

In 2002, botulinum toxin was approved for use in the treatment of the appearance of frown lines that appeared in patients between the eyes on the forehead, and given its early positive results, its popularity grew quickly.  Botox is more of a trade name with which consumers are much more familiar, and there are estimates that nearly one million people have undergone some form of Botox treatment since its approval date.

The Botox Procedure:
The procedure involved with Botox injections is quite simple and is completed quickly.  The patient has this done on an out-patient basis, and he or she simply reports to the medical office where the procedure is to be performed.  After cleansing the injection area thoroughly, the doctor simply makes a few injections – typically between four and five on each side of the forehead and an additional two or three around either eye.

After the injections, the patient remains in his or her current position for a few minutes, and all he or she has to remember is not to lay down for a period of two to four hours after the injections to make sure that the injections take hold properly.

The Dangers of Botox Injections:
However, recent stories have come to the forefront that a Botox injection series is not nearly as simple as it seems above.  Repeated complaints from patients regarding serious side effects, including partial paralysis, aspiration pneumonia and even death in some cases have prompted advocacy groups to request that the FDA begin the process of regulating this product and process more closely.

Your Next Step if injured or hurt from Botox:
If you or someone you love has suffered as a result of a Botox injection, seek immediate medical attention to obtain a diagnosis and prognosis.  Subsequent to your exam, contact a defective products attorney immediately to schedule an initial consultation.
