Byetta FDA Warning on Side Effects

Type 2 diabetes is a growing epidemic all over the world, particularly in the United States.  As is always the case with the pharmaceutical industry, companies large and small are throwing huge amounts of resources into their research, development and ultimately their marketing efforts in order to get these medications to the people who need them in order to properly manage their condition.

In fact, the diabetes prescription drug market has become an industry in and of itself when measuring the revenues generated within it.  According to reports, there is currently a $24 billion worldwide market for drugs specifically designed to treat diabetes, both type 1 and type 2.

April, 2009 UPDATE on Byetta's producer Amylin Pharmaceuticals.
Shares of Amylin stock, which closed at $9.66 Thursday, have dropped 72% from its August high of $34.80.
The drop began when news of patient deaths led the Food and Drug Administration to start working with the companies to add stronger warnings about severe pancreatitis to Byetta's label.
The revision and the approval for Byetta's use as a monotherapy have been delayed for months, which has stoked worries of regulatory delays of a longer-acting version of Byetta, expected to launch in 2010. Amylin has repeatedly asserted that there remains no proven relationship between Byetta and pancreatic side effects.
One of the drugs that hit the market in 2005 is known as Byetta.  The diabetes drug is manufactured and marketed in a collective effort by two companies, Eli Lilly and Co. and Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc.  Byetta was extremely successful in terms of revenue as well, generating an estimated $686 billion in revenue during 2007.

However, in October of 2007, the FDA came out with a public health alert regarding Byetta.  This alert was issued in response to reports that approximately 30 patients had developed significant pancreatic problems after using Byetta for a time.  These problems included conditions as serious as acute pancreatitis, which can be fatal if it’s not caught and treated on time and properly.

The FDA has once again acted on Byetta in recent days in reaction to additional reports of six more cases of health problems that were encountered as a result of side effects that developed with users of Byetta.  Of those six additional reports, two patients died from acute pancreatitis.  This condition presents itself with symptoms that include nausea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain, but it’s also problematic in that it’s difficult for patients to understand whether their condition is acute or not.

The FDA’s latest action against Byetta requires that the drug’s manufacturers formulate and place a direct, stern warning on all labels of Byetta that warn specifically of the potential for the development of pancreatic problems when taking the drug.  This is the most serious action the FDA can take short of requiring a full recall.  Overall, more than 700,000 people in the United States have used Byetta since its approval for release onto the marketplace in 2005.
