Cefepime Lawyer Information

Overview of another Potentially Dangerous Drug – Cefepime
More and more prescription drugs are hitting the market these days than ever before, and that can be seen in two ways.  On the positive side of the issue is that people now have a chance to treat conditions in a way that’s never been possible before, which only increases the chances of a longer and more viable life for many people.

However, the flood of drugs hitting the market can also lead to more problems for those who use these drugs.  There are many reasons for this as well, and one of the drugs to hit the market with promise and come under scrutiny for its alleged link to side effects is Cefepime.  If you have been injured as a result of using this medication, you need to contact a defective drugs attorney immediately to schedule an initial consultation.

What is Cefepime?
Cefepime is a drug that’s manufactured and distributed by Bristol-Meyers Squibb, and was formulated to help patients treat several conditions and bacterial infections.  It’s classified as an anti-biotic, and is seen as a member of the β–lactams, which is also known as cephalosporins.  These are common classifications of medications that serve the purpose of killing strains of viruses.

The types of bacterial infections that Cefepime is used to treat include respiratory, skin, urinary, bone, genital, joint and other types of maladies.   The drug is administered by way of an injection that’s administered by your medical care provider, although many times your doctor will instruct you on how to handle the injection yourself after your initial dose.

What is the Problem?
The main force behind the scrutiny that’s being focused on Cefepime is an article that appeared recently in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, which detailed some statistics behind the drug that were and are extremely disturbing.  Basically, Cefepime was tracked and compared to results experienced by patients who were taking other drugs in its class, and early results indicated that Cefepime showed a higher probability for early death to occur in the patients who were involved in the study.

Although the results are preliminary in nature, the Food and Drug Administration has published a warning for health care professionals to provide notice of the potential increased risk associated with Cefepime.  The FDA is also working with Bristol-Myers Squib in further evaluating the drug, and this analysis is expected to last four months.

Your Next Step
While no definitive guidelines have been established in regards to Cefepime at this point, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have legal options.  If you or someone you love has suffered as a result of this medication, contact a defective drugs attorney immediately to begin the process of evaluating your legal rights and options.
