RECALL ALERT: Children's Cough and Cold Medication Lawyer Information

UPDATE: January 17, 2008

FDA informed consumers and healthcare professionals that the Agency has completed its review of information regarding the safety of over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold medicines in children under 2 years of age and recommends that these drugs not be used to treat children in this age group because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects can occur.

FDA's recommendation is based on both the review of the information the Agency received about serious side effects in children in the referenced age group and the discussion and recommendations made at the October 18 -19, 2007, public advisory committee meeting at which this issue was discussed. FDA has not completed its review of information about the safety of OTC cough and cold medicines in children 2 through 11 years of age. See the FDA Public Health Advisory for Agency recommendations regarding this issue.

----------------------end of recall update for Oct 11, 2007---------------------

Growing concern has been raised throughout the United States over the last year regarding the safety of children's cough and cold medicine. Healthcare professionals alike agree that the efficacy and dosing recommendations of children's cold medicines are not only questionable, but unsafe. Of the greatest concerns are those children under the age of 2 who are receiving over the counter medications that possess the ability to be detrimental to their health, even fatal.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that in the last two years that over 1,500 infants and toddlers have received emergency treatment due to such medications. Also, brought to the forefront are the labeling practices and "dosing" recommendations printed on the labels of the most popular children's cough and cold medicines such as Mucinex, Robitussin, Triaminic, and Dimatapp. Due to their wide availability and accessibility, children's cough and cold medicines are being used too often for symptoms they are not even proved to treat. Another concern raised is the notion of parents “doubling up” and administering more than one over the counter medication with the same active ingredient to their children. Overdosing is becoming a more common occurrence, with parents using such medicines to treat every minor ailment experienced by their children.

A voluntary recall of Mucinex Children's Cough Syrup was issued on April 10, 2007 due to the possibility of dosage error, with the included dosing cup being notably confusing for administering the correct drug amount. The Nonprescription Drug Advisory Committee will convene on October 18 - 19, 2007 to discuss and assess the concerns that are being raised regarding this highly over looked epidemic.

As parents, the responsibility to keep your children safe is of the utmost importance, that means being wary of those products that are marketed to appear helpful and effective. Asking questions when you are doubtful about dosing practices, as well as consulting your physician prior to administering any medication, over the counter or otherwise. Be a proactive parent, the future of our world is depending on you.

If your child, or a child close to you, has been victimized as a result of using over the counter cough and cold medication our firm is available to assist you in seeking the restitution you and your family are entitled to.
