Digitek Heart Medication Recall: Possible Digitalis Toxicity Double Dose
The need for heart medications is as prevalent as any other medication need in the United States, and this extreme demand is resulting in a ramping up of the formulation, manufacturing and distributing of these sorts of drugs and medications by innumerable drug companies. One medication in particular has been manufactured and distributed by three different entities, including Actavis Totowa LLC, which manufactures Digitek, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which distributes Bertek and UDL Laboratories, Inc., which handles the brand known as UDL.
While the names may be different, the active ingredients and formula are basically the same, and these drugs serve the intended purpose of helping those patients who suffer from heart failure or from irregular heartbeats, which are obviously extremely dangerous conditions. Unfortunately, all of these drugs have recently been recalled by these companies according to a recent entry on the FDA’s Web site, and the situation has been classified as a Class I recall, which is the most dangerous within the realm of recalls with the FDA.
The drugs are sold under different brand names, but they are essentially the same product with a similar active ingredient.
They are as follows:
- Digitek
- Bertek
- UDL
The reason for this recall is due to a manufacturing error, whereby many of these pills are being placed into containers with double the thickness of what they should have been. The danger created by this result is that patients may be taking twice the medication that’s intended, which can create a medical condition that’s extremely dangerous, particularly in those with renal failure.
Digitalis Toxicity related to Digitek results, which is presented by symptoms that include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Low Blood Pressure
- Bradycardia
This condition is known as digitalis toxicity, and symptoms of this condition include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, low blood pressure and bradycardia, which is a dangerously low resting heart rate. This condition creates unreasonable danger in those patients, and if you’ve been taking any of these drugs, contact your doctor and a Digitek attorney immediately to get the help you need.
