Dostinex and Heart Valve Problems
Dostinex is a popular drug designed to treat the debilitating effects of the neurological condition Parkinson’s disease. “In conclusion, our study showed that treatment with either pergolide or cabergoline, particularly at daily doses greater than 3 mg and for periods of 6 months or longer, was associated with a substantially increased risk of newly diagnosed cardiac-valve regurgitation. There was no evidence of such an increase with the use of other dopamine agonists.”
This story was in response to two European studies that discovered that this Pfizer-manufactured-drug could cause heart valve damage. Researchers in Italy discovered that almost 25% of Parkinson’s patients that used Dostinex to treat their disease suffered moderate to severe heart-valve damage. Additionally, scientists and doctors in Germany found out that Dostinex was five to seven times more likely cause leaky heart valves opposed to those that took less dangerous drugs.
Other heart related side effects of Dostinex include:
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Cardiac valvulopathy
- Leaky heart valves
- Damage to the Aortic and Mitral valves
- Valvular heart disease
The Mayo Clinic also discovered that Dostinex as well as its generic counterpart cabergoline were likely to cause heart problems; in fact, doctors at the Clinic concluded that "Cabergoline should be discontinued if valvular disease is detected and no other cause identified."
