Ephedra

Ephedra is a naturally occurring chemical found in a wide variety of plants. It was used for millennia in herbal and traditional remedies, but pharmaceutical manufactures found ways to introduce it into a wide variety of herbal supplements and medications.

Many Ephedra products were sold over-the-counter as dietary supplements and to manage weight, increase energy, and enhance athletic performance. However, the FDA once banned all supplements containing the chemical dues to incidents of heart attacks, seizures, high blood pressure strokes, and even death became linked to Ephedra use. Many drug companies tried to downplay the danger of the drug by calling it "natural" or "traditional" without highlighting its potentially negative side effects.

Ephedra Side Effects

Even though the traditional medicine used Ephedra in countless herbal remedies over thousands of years, pharmaceutical companies manufactured and marketed this chemical in a number of ways before it was banned in 2004. Initially promised to contribute to safely aid weight loss, increase energy, and enhance sports performance, a number of people suffered serious medical conditions because of the drug.

Incidents of heart attacks, seizures, high blood pressure strokes, and even death became linked to Ephedra use. The federal government through the FDA banned all supplements containing Ephedra, and many individual state governments enacted laws designed to protect them from drug and supplement companies who wanted to exploit the relative lack of understanding about herbal supplements.

Ephedra News

After the Food and Drug Administration banned Ephedra and Ephedra-containing drugs in 2004 many people began to reassess the dangers of the supplement. The FDA reported on thousands of cases of people who suffered serious injury because they were deceived into believing their supplements were healthy merely because they were marketed as "natural".

Then, on April 14th, 2005, the ban on Ephedra was overturned for various legal reasons, but the concern over its safety remains paramount in many people's minds. The dietary supplement community can now legally market drugs and enhancements containing the chemical, and a whole new generation of people may have to live in fear.

Although the ban on Ephedra was overturned for various legal reasons, doubts over its safety remains today. If you are a victim of Ephedra-related side effects you may be able to seek compensation for your condition. Contact a dedicated, experienced, and aggressive Ephedra attorney today.
