Overdose Problems with the Fentanyl Pain Patch:April 21, 2009 A news story from Idaho has surfaced about the accidental Fentanyl Pain Patch overdose of four people in the Idaho Falls area this year.
Dr. John Huston, Bonneville County Coroner's Office: "The patch is made to soak through the skin, which takes a long time, and it has large amounts of medication in the patch, so if you take it through some other route, then you'll get an awful large dose that the body can't handle at one time." It's unclear how many of the recent four overdoses were intentional or accidental. However the deputy coroner says people need to be careful how they use the patch.
The Food and Drug Administration issued a Public Health Advisory on July 15, 2005 regarding the Duragesic patch containing the drug Fentanyl. The Fentanyl patch is an extremely powerful narcotic pain reliever, some 80 times more powerful than morphine, and is used to treat long-term cancer pain. The original recall of the Janssen Pharmaceutica 75mcg/h of February 2004 was expanded to include new reports of deaths associated with this patch.
Certain batches of the Fentanyl patch showed a defect that caused a disruption in the amount of medication the patch provides. Too little medication can cause severe pain and withdrawal symptoms, while too much medication can result in coma, depressed respiration, and even death by overdose. Unfortunately, because the patch releases regulated amounts of the drug over a three day period it is difficult to tell if the patch is malfunctioning until it is too late.
The drug in the Duragesic patch is extremely dangerous if used incorrectly. Doctors only prescribe it if all other pain relievers fail, for it is quite addictive and dangerous, and only patients tolerant of other analgesics can cope with the high levels of narcotics over the 72-hour absorption period. A failure in any aspect of the patch can result in catastrophic consequences.
Fentanyl Overdose
Fentanyl is one of the most powerful analgesic (pain-relieving) chemicals in existence. Strictly regulated, it is used to treat chronic pain common to many forms of cancer. The Duragesic patch allows constant, regulated, and low dose release of the drug over a period of 48 hours. Fentanyl is so strong that the body can only safely tolerate small doses, but it takes a while before a sufficient amount builds up in the blood stream before it has any effect.
Unfortunately a flaw in some of the Duragesic patches allows too little or too much drug to contact the skin. While too little of the drug produces extremely uncomfortable but rarely fatal withdrawal symptoms, too much of the drug produces fatal fentanyl overdoses. These fentanyl overdoses gradually overtake the victim often before they know they are dying, making emergency treatment and care much more difficult.
The Fentanyl patch can be beneficial when manufactured properly, but unfortunately too many people have been exposed to defective patches. If you or someone you know suffered because of the Fentanyl patch, you may be able to collect financial compensation for your pain and loss.
