Gardasil
Merck & Co. is a pharmaceutical giant, and it's a company that's constantly researching, developing and ultimately releasing new drugs and medications onto the marketplace. Some of these medications are reactive in nature and others are more preventative, but all of them appear to be reactions to growing health problems.
One of those health problems was the growing attention paid to the development of cervical cancer in women. After years of research, doctors and professionals discovered that a virus that's contracted by women tends to greatly increase the chances that a female will ultimately develop this disease. That virus is known as the human papillomavirus, or HPV.
As a result of this discovery, technicians at Merck & Co. ultimately were able to formulate a medication that was designed to prevent the invasion of this virus into females. This medication was named Gardasil, and it was ultimately approved by the FDA for distribution in 2006. Early results were promising in every respect.
Not only were women and their physicians receptive to this medication, but the drug also generated an enormous amount of revenue. Estimates showed that approximately 8 million females in the United States have taken the drug, and the SEC has stated that Merck & Co. saw $1.5 billion per year in revenue as a result of the use of Gardasil.
The drug works by administering a series of injections, specifically three different injections over the course of several weeks, all of which are designed to ward off HPV. Females of seemingly all ages were given doses of this medication, and for a time there were no reports of problems as a result of using it.
Symptoms and reactions associated with Gardasil
However, this 'honeymoon period' did not last long. In recent months, more and more reports of problems associated with Gardasil have surfaced, and some of the negative reactions were not only extremely serious, but in 18 cases so far those reactions have been fatal in nature. Generally, symptoms and reactions associated with Gardasil include:
- Seizures
- Spontaneous abortion
- Anaphylactic shock
- Guillain-Barre Syndrome
- Optic lesions
- Convulsions
- Paralysis
- Coma
- Death
Overall, there have been an estimated 8,000 adverse reaction reports compiled in those who have used this medication, and it appears that these adverse reactions know no age limit when it comes to its alleged victims. Girls as young as 11 years old have suddenly died after using Gardasil.
At this point, the specific reason for these reactions is not known, but physicians are beginning to take notice of the potential risks involved with this measure, and some have stated that Gardasil, if used at all, should be limited to women who have reached the age of maturity. However, no connection between age and adverse reactions has been discovered at this time.
If you are considering Gardasil to help prevent cervical cancer, you need to be aware of the potential risks. Speak to your doctor about these reports before receiving a series of injections, and if you've been harmed as a result of this drug, seek legal help immediately by a Gardasil lawyer or attorney who specialize in Gardasil lawsuits.
