Meridia
The Food and Drug Administration approved Meridia in November 1997 to treat obesity. It is the same class of drugs as Fen Phen and methamphetamine, and allows people to burn excess fat without exercising or changing their diet. The first lawsuits against Meridia were filed in March 2002, stemming from the large number of serious and potentially life-threatening side effects it can cause. Meridia is a controlled substance within the United States and cannot be taken without prescription.
Most lawsuits against Meridia claim that the drug manufacturer Abbott Laboratories should have taken better precautions before providing innocent people with dangerous, addictive, and potentially deadly drug. There have been at least 29 deaths associated with Meridia, stemming from heart attacks, strokes, cardiac arrests, and other serious cardiovascular conditions. There were a further 397 reports of adverse reaction to Meridia that were serious but did not result in death.
In the rarest of cases Meridia may cause cardiac valve dysfunction or heart valve disease. Weight loss drugs similar to Meridia have been known to cause pulmonary hypertension, but currently there is no hard evidence liking the drug to the condition, but ongoing studies may reveal potential links in the future.
If you or someone you know was injured by Meridia you may be able to take legal action to recover damages you suffered. You must act quickly, for statute of limitation laws restrict the amount of time you have to take legal action. Make sure that you contact a dedicated, experienced, and compassionate Meridia lawyer as soon as possible, and get the justice you deserve today.
