Metabolife
Metabolife was a popular dietary supplement that allegedly helped people control their appetites in order to help them lose weight and keep it off. Unfortunately, it was linked to a number of serious side effects including seizure, heart attack, and even death. The active ingredient in Metabolife is Ephedra, a drug stimulant well known to cause adverse reactions in a broad cross-section of people around the world.
The United States Justice Department opened an investigation of claims that Metabolife intentionally deceived the public about the dangers of its product. Within a few hours of the beginning of the investigation Metabolife announced it would turn over to the Food and Drug Administration the 13,000 complaints it received since 1997. Shockingly, 80 of the complaints involved deaths due to seizures, heart attacks, or other serious health problems. Another 100 to 200 victims had to be hospitalized. The number of complaints was higher than even FDA estimates.
The lack of disclosure of the dangers of the drug and the complete disavowal of responsibility by Metabolife significantly increased the likelihood of further injury to the public. Although products containing Ephedra have been banned, people will likely continue to feel the effects of Metabolife for years to come.
