Mirapex
Mirapex is a drug used to treat the uncontrollable and debilitating tremors caused my Parkinson’s disease and Restless Leg Syndrome. Unfortunately, recent studies have linked Mirapex to a number of serious and life-altering compulsive behaviors such as compulsive gambling, shopping, overeating, and even hypersexuality. A study conducted by the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Research Center at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona surveyed 1,800 Parkinson’s patients, and of the 529 people taking Mirapex, 8 people or 1.5% of the people developed gambling problems.
Parkinson’s disease results from the lack of the vital neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for coordination as well as feelings of pleasure, happiness, and satisfaction. Mirapex helps patients achieve the levels of dopamine necessary to function properly by replacing the level of dopamine in the brain. Unfortunately, many of these victims experience a rush of pleasure during the anticipation for reward or excitement associated with risk and reward, such as gambling, and can no longer control their actions.
The Mayo Clinic also published a report in July 2005 that linked drugs like Mirapex to an increase in gambling and other compulsive behaviors. The report followed 11 Parkinson’s patients who began to have gambling problems over the years between 2002 and 2004, and since this initial report these doctors have discovered 14 more patients at the Mayo Clinic with similar problems.
