Ortho Evra

Ortho Evra is contraceptive birth control patch which attaches to the skin at the upper arm, buttocks, thigh, or abdomen. Intended to be more convenient than a daily pill, the patch is replaced every week once the body depletes the estrogen and progestin contained within.

Although the birth control patches are becoming more and more popular, there are some serious potential health risks. There are always inherent risks with using contraceptives, but there have been reports of a fatal condition called severe deep vein thrombosis in women who used the patch as opposed to women who take the Pill.

Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch & Strokes

There are several notable side effects caused by manmade contraceptive devices such as the Ortho Evra transdermal patch. The patch introduces time released hormones estrogen and progestin into the bloodstream to inhibit fertilization of the egg after sexual intercourse.

Birth control medications have always been associated with the risk of cardiovascular side effects because they interfere with the natural way blood coagulates in the body. Over time, this subtle buildup of blood cells can lead to a clot that travels through the circulatory system to the brain where it causes a stroke. The Ortho Evra patch is well known to contribute to a three-fold increase in number of strokes when compared to oral contraceptives.

Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch & Blood Clots

Ever since the development of the birth control pill in the 1960s doctors have wanted a more reliable delivery system than a cumbersome daily pill. As science became more advanced, doctors discovered that direct transdermal application of the chemicals ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromin could produce the same effects as a pill taken every day.

Unfortunately, direct absorption of these chemicals significantly increases the likelihood of a condition called deep vein thrombosis, commonly referred to as a blood clot. This condition is extremely dangerous because it develops without symptoms and can cause almost instant death if the clot travels to the lungs or brain. Women who use the Ortho Evra transdermal birth control patch are three times more likely to develop a blood clot than those who use traditional oral contraceptives.

According to an FDA report in 2005, the Ortho Evra patch is estimated to have caused over 10,000 adverse reactions, including potentially fatal blood clots.

Ortho Evra Side Effects

The birth control pill helped to ignite the sexual revolution of the 1960s, making it possible for people to engage in sexual relations without fear of unwanted pregnancy. The birth control patch followed, and while initially thought to be a wonder drug, further and more in-depth studies led to the discovery of certain serious side effects.

Unfortunately using the patch carries a number of potentially dangerous side effects. These consequences range from weight gain, nausea, and breast changes to serious complications such as depression, urinary tract infections, and even death from blood clots and deep vein thrombosis. In fact, in 2005 the FDA stated that there have been over 10,000 reports of adverse reactions to the Ortho Evra Patch.

If you suffered from adverse health effects because of the Ortho Evra patch, you may be entitled to take legal action against the manufacturer. You deserve answers - contact a knowledgeable, compassionate attorney today.
