Phenergan

On April 25, 2006, the Food and Drug Administration alerted doctors, healthcare professionals, and patients to a number of problems regarding the antihistamine promethazine in patients less than two years of age.  The FDA is investigating a number of dangerous complications that have been linked to the drug, including respiratory depression and two deaths.  The FDA requested that all forms of promethazine including generic and brand name types of syrups, tablets, suppositories, and injectables carry warnings to that illustrate the danger to children under two.

Promethazine is an antihistamine drug used as a sedative and to treat nausea, hay fever, allergies, motion sickness, and coughing, and it can reduce the power of opioid drugs as well.  Some doctors also use it as an antipsychotic, even though it is not designed nor is it particularly effective for this purpose.  Wyeth, the drug company that manufactures promethazine under the brand name Phenergan, has had to change the packaging for all their products.

The FDA also warned that doctors should exercise extreme caution when giving promethazine to children over two.  Furthermore, promethazine should never be given to people who are asthmatic, vomiting, or unconscious because of its potential to have life-threatening complications.  Other side effects of promethazine include seizure, dry mouth, drowsiness, bone-marrow issues, breathing problems, and a potentially-fatal condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

If you or someone you know has developed serious complications due to Phenergan or other promethazine products, you need to consult a dedicated and experienced defective drug attorney today.  You may be entitled to claim financial restitution from those responsible for your condition, but if you hesitate you may lose your right to take legal action. Do not become another victim of the greed and irresponsibility of a heartless pharmaceutical company.  Contact a phenergan lawyer today.
