Provigil Alert:

For centuries, millions of people around the world simply could not obtain and maintain a normal and healthy sleep pattern.  Conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy haunted those who suffered from them, as they were forced to live lives of fatigue and constantly deal with a lack of energy.

That began to change in 1998, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new drug called Provigil, manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant Cephalon, for marketing and distribution.  Provigil’s purpose was to help provide people with a ‘boost’ of awareness and energy, and helped to prevent the sudden sleeping spells that befell those who suffered from narcolepsy.

However, that all changed in 2007, as reports of side effects that were linked to Provigil began to surface, and these side effects were dangerous and potentially fatal.  Below is a brief overview of the uses of Provigil and the side effects to which it’s been linked, but if you have suffered as a result of using this drug, contact your doctor immediately to end your use of Provigil and then you need to consider contacting a defective drugs attorney to evaluate your legal rights.

Provigil Uses:

During its time on the market, Provigil began to be used both for the intended purposes and for off-label uses in several situations.  In regards to its intended use, Provigil proved to be successful in providing its users with a heightened sense of awareness that helped them avoid the unexpected sleeping spells associated with narcolepsy and the constant fatigue that’s an inherent part of obstructive sleep apnea.

Provigil was also used as a quasi-performance enhancer for those professions that are best-served by a sense of heightened awareness, most prominently military pilots.  It was also used for age-associated decline, attention deficit disorder, fatigue from high-pressure jobs and other uses.

The Problem with Provigil: Side Effects list.

The problems associated with Provigil have been many in number, but only the most recent, and most serious side effect has prompted the FDA to release a warning notification and to change its label.  Initially, Provigil showed a tendency to lead to depressive and even suicidal thoughts as well as hallucinations.  However, statistics also showed that these effects tended to dissipate after a period of 36 hours.

The most serious side effect, however, to which Provigil has been linked is known as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), which is a terrifying condition whereby the patient’s skin begins to peel off the body, and this leads to damaging infections that can even be fatal.  SJS initially presents itself most commonly in the form of a red skin rash.
