Topical Anesthetic Creams

The Food and Drug Administration warned five medication production firms on December 5, 2006, to stop compounding and distributing a number popular standardized topical anesthetic creams commonly used in a number of commercial procedures. The five firms the FDA warned include:

  • Triangle Compounding Pharmacy
  • University Pharmacy
  • Custom Scripts Pharmacy
  • Hal’s Compounding Pharmacy
  • New England Compounding Center

The concern over these compounds is that they are not previewed by the FDA for safety and standard effectiveness.  Furthermore, these compounds pose a number of serious health risks and can cause a number of severe reactions including seizures and irregular heartbeats, and there have even been two deaths associated with compounded topical anesthetic creams made by Triangle Compounding Pharmacy and University Pharmacy.

These creams contain high number of local anesthetics that include:

  • Lidocaine
  • Tetracaine
  • Benzocain
  • Prilocaine

These high-potency anesthetics are not intended to be combined without direct medical supervision that can take into account the individual patient's needs and to anticipate potential side effects.  Combining any of these medications increases the potential for  harm.  Many doctors use these creams in a variety of procedures including:

  • Tattoo removal
  • Laser hair removal
  • Skin treatments
  • Microdermabrasion

Another part of the danger of these compounded topical anesthetic creams is that they are often applied to large areas of skin, left on the body for long periods of time, and then usually covered with a bandage, plastic, or other dressing, each of which can increase the chance of a serious and potentially life-threatening side effect.

The pharmaceutical companies are allowed to compound these chemicals based on the traditional role of small pharmacies mixing two or more drugs in order to produce a drug that was suited for an individual's private use.  This medical oversight was critical to prevent any potential negative side effects, but wide scale compounding prevents companies from addressing individual needs while increasing the likelihood of devastating side effects.

If you or someone you know was adversely affected by compounded topical anesthetic creams, you need to take action right away.  You may be able to recover economic restitution for your pain and suffering, but the statute of limitations in your state gives you only so much time to take legal action.  Let our dedicated and experienced defective drug help you get the financial compensation you may deserve.  Contact us today.
