Tysabri
Tysabri is a drug used in to treat the debilitating and devastating disease Multiple Sclerosis. Unfortunately, it has been tied to an uncommon disorder called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy, or PML. This disease generally affects people who have weakened immune systems due to the effects of drugs used to treat leukemia, kidney transplants, and AIDS. It is caused by a common human polyomavirus, the JC virus, and causes the destruction of the fatty sheath that covers and insulates the nerves in the brain.
When used in conjunction with other MS drugs such as Avonex, Tysabri has been known to cause a number of serious conditions including Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy. In fact, Tysabri had to be withdrawn from the market after two side effects that resulted in one death and one case of possible PML. PML symptoms include mental deterioration, vision loss, paralysis, coma, speech loss, and muscle problems, but death can occur within one and four months after the first symptoms appear.
After the initial symptoms, PML gets worse and can cause extensive brain damage. It also affects several different parts of the brain at the same time, and destroys the white part of the brain. The brain slowly degenerates into a collection of unorganized cells.
If you or someone you love has had their life destroyed by Tysabri-induced Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy, you may be able to take legal action against those responsible.
