In March of 2010 DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, issued a recall that this device was failing only after a couple of years after a person has one installed. The FDA received close to 300 complaints, starting in early 2008, from people with the ASR hip implant.

DePuy Orthopaedics has issued a recall of its ASR Hip Resurfacing System stating that it is experiencing a failure rate as high as 12% at the 5 year mark. The versions of this system that were recalled were available and sold in 2003; people with hip implants prior to this date are not affected by this recall.

The problems associated with the metal-to-metal implants seem to be the very design aspect of the product.
Anywhere in any situation where a base metal comes into contact with other base metals, think car pistons, friction occurs, and without a form of lubricate, the heat created (friction) creates rapid wear down of parts.
If this happens in a car engine, the bits of metal are generally collected in the oil filter, but when this happens in a person’s body, there is not outlet for the metal debris to go. The body tries in vain to move or dispense with the metal parts. It has been seen that this metal debris can be absorbed by the tissue and bones surrounding the hip.
