Boston Scientific Express Stent & Taxus Stent

Boston Scientific is one of the world’s largest medical device manufacturers in the world, with revenues that totaled over $6.3 billion in 2005. Unfortunately, there are a number of problems with several of its most popular lifesaving devices.

Angioplasties are used to open up arteries that are too clogged with plaques to allow proper blood circulation. Doctors snake a small thin tube with a balloon on the end, and once the balloon reaches the blockage it inflates and allows blood to flow through. Many devices also have a mesh metal framework around them to give the artery more support and stability.

Boston Scientific was forced to recall the Taxus Stent, a device used during angioplasties to hold open arteries after small balloon clears out the blockage. The outside of this tiny wire mesh is also coated with medication to make the procedure safer. Boston Scientific recalled 85,000 of these Taxus Stents because of the propensity of the balloons to fail to deflate enough and require immediate bypass surgery. There has been one death, 16 “serious” injuries, and 42 complaints of problems with the Taxus Stent.

Another similar device with similar problems is the Boston Scientific Express Stent. This stent provides support for arteries damaged by cardiovascular diseases. These devices are prone to severe accidents due to a manufacturer’s defect that causes the balloons to fail to deflate properly, causing them to get stuck inside the patient when doctors remove the catheter that inflates the balloon. Boston Scientific recalled more than 99,000 of these stents, and ordered hospitals to stop using the device.

No one should have to suffer because a medical device caused them more harm than good. If you or someone you love was injured by the Boston Scientific Express Taxus Stent or the Boston Scientific Express Stent, you may be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering.
