Baxter Hemodialysis Machine Attorney

Baxter Healthcare Corporation announced on January 1, 2005, that it was initiating a worldwide recall of its Meridian Hemodialysis machine due to a problem in the tubing sets within the machine that are believed to have caused one death and one serious injury.

Hemodialysis machines are used to filter impurities out of the blood of people with kidney failure. They essentially remove all the blood from a patient and return it without the chemicals in it such as potassium that the kidneys would normally remove. It is absolutely critical that these machines function properly, for even the smallest mistake can have the gravest consequences.

The recall affected all units of model numbers 5M5576 and 5M5576R. Of the 2,800 devices still in use, 2,100 are in the United States, the last of which were manufactured in 2002. The main problem of these devices centered on the clips the tubes must pass through on the front of the machine, and if improperly routed these tubes can bend or knot, breaking blood cells causing serious injury.

Baxter notified patients and doctors to advise them of the potential danger, and the Food and Drug Administration warned that their independent test confirmed the defect in the design of the machine could in fact damage blood cells, and cause potentially life-threatening kidney damage and anemia.

If you or someone you love was injured by the Baxter Hemodialysis Machine, you may have the right to seek financial compensation for your pain and suffering. You must act quickly, because statutes of limitation restrict the amount of time you have to take legal action. You could lose out on the financial restitution you deserve. Contact a lawyer today.
