Zimmer Durom Cup Problems

Zimmer Holdings is one of the leaders in its industry, and one of the many products it’s provided to patients around the world is known as the Durom Cup hip replacement component. This part is used in hip replacement surgeries, and it basically works to replace the ‘natural’ hip joint with a contraption made of advanced materials designed to function much as any hip joint that hadn’t been replaced would.

The Durom Cup enjoyed a brief early period of success, and the product’s history dates back to 2003, when it was originally released onto the market in Europe. Initially, the response was positive, and there did not appear to be cause for concern for those who had trusted the Durom Cup to serve as their hip going forward.

The benefits of the Durom Cup, or any other properly-functioning hip replacement component, are almost innumerable. Most patients who make the decision to undergo hip replacement surgery have suffered for years from chronic pain and an almost total inability to move and enjoy any sort of active lifestyle.

However, the procedure itself is also quite costly. Estimates provided by doctors who perform this surgery show that such a procedure can cost anywhere between $30,000 and $40,000. Therefore, any patient who makes the decision to move forward in this regard obviously has financial interests in having it done only once.

Unfortunately, for many patients who had the Durom Cup implanted into their bodies, this is not how things turned out for them. Below is a brief look at the situation that’s affecting Zimmer Holdings and the Durom Cup hip replacement component.

Why the Durom Cup was recalled:

The Durom Cup was approved for sale, distribution and use in the United States by the FDA in 2006, and Zimmer Holdings wasted no time in getting the product into the stream as quickly as possible. It’s estimated that approximately 13,000 Durom Cup units were used in hip replacement procedures in the United States during the first two years of its existence as a viable product.

However, several prominent doctors began to notice a troubling trend with those who were using the Durom Cup, and given that there is no dependable database of side effects recorded for products like this one, this qualitative analysis was about the only effort made to alert the public to potential side effects associated with the Durom Cup.

Basically, doctors that included Dr. Lawrence Dorr, a respected surgeon in Los Angeles, became troubled with the development of chronic and severe pain in the hip joint soon after the procedure to the point that many patients had to have an additional replacement procedure done to correct the problem.

Although no actual database exists, as mentioned above, doctors estimate that this problem could affect hundreds of patients by the time all the defective units have been replaced. As a result, Zimmer Holdings recently announced a recall of the Durom Cup from the United States market.

If you or someone you love has been struggling as a result of using the Durom Cup, you need to contact a defective medical device attorney as soon as possible to schedule an initial consultation. You owe it to yourself to understand your legal rights, so contact an attorney today to get that process started.
