Products Causing Infant Injury and Death Grows with Latest Recall

Infant products have become more prevalent in the United States, and the industry as a whole continues to grow with ever-increasing budgets set aside by companies for research and development. As a result, many long-dreaded daily chores that were simply a part of everyday child rearing have become much more manageable. However, every new product or innovation comes with a risk, and tragically, that appears to be the case with a growing number of products that are designed specifically for infants. Below is a brief look at one of the most recent cases of a defective product leading to a child’s death, followed with a brief overview of a few other examples of products that have been recalled due to the presence of unreasonable danger with their use.

Playkids USA’s Convertible Cribs

Playkids USA had imported lines of convertible cribs that were manufactured in China in recent years, and these cribs proved to be quite useful for many parents. The reason is that they were able to be collapsed and compressed and then folded out to form a full-sized crib, thereby making every crib portable. The cribs were manufactured with a mesh siding that allowed for them to be collapsed and expanded, and it was this mesh siding that led to the eventual death of a 5-month-old infant in Brooklyn, New York. According to reports, the child became entrapped in the space created between the mattress and the siding when pushed out from the inside, and as a result the child died due to suffocation. As a result of this report, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) worked with Playkids to initiate a recall of the following line of convertible cribs:
Playkids U.S.A. convertible crib/playpen/bassinet/bed with model number PLK-909. "Playkids U.S.A." can be found on the packaging and on a label sewn into the side of the crib. The model number can be found on the packaging.

Other Infant Product Recalls

Other recent recalls of infant products include:

  • Munchkin Inc.’s Baby Bottle and Food Warmers – These products were recalled because they showed a tendency to overheat and lead to a fire hazard.
  • Nintendo’s Lapel Pins – Nintendo recalled these lapel pins because they were made of metal and contained high amounts of lead.
  • Ellaroo LLC’s Infant Sling Carriers – These sling carriers were recalled because the aluminum rings on the carriers showed a tendency to bend and/or break, creating a serious fall hazard for the child who was inside the carrier.
