Guidant Corporation made a decision on July 19, 2005 to recall a line of their pacemakers because of a potentially deadly flaw that was discovered. A pacemaker is a small instrument that is planted into a patient's chest when the heart's electrical system is dysfunctional.
In the recalled Guidant line, a special hermetic seal created to protect the sensitive electronics could potentially allow moisture into the device, causing it to fail. This failure could be life-threatening in certain situations.
The Discovery line of pacemakers belongs to the group of 78,000 other devices made by Guidant that may potentially malfunction due to this flaw, with 18,000 still in use in the United States. There have already been 69 failures of these devices, with one fatality thought to be associated with the malfunction. Specific Discovery models that are affected include:
Guidant Discovery 1174
Guidant Discovery 1175
Guidant Discovery 1273
Guidant Discovery 1274
Guidant Discovery 1275
While the failures can occur without warning, a doctor can sometimes detect a leak-related defect before the malfunction causes serious or fatal problems. Check with your physician as soon as possible to make sure that you are not at risk.
If you or a loved one has been affected, you should seek legal guidance immediately.
