On July 19, 2005, Guidant Corporation decided to recall a line of their medical devices, including the Pulsar artificial pacemaker because of a potentially significant and dangerous defect in some of the models.

A pacemaker is a battery-powered implantable device that stimulates the heart with electrictiy in order to contract and pump blood throughout the body in situations where the heart's electrical system is not working properly. The instrument is usually about the size of two half dollars and is implanted directly into the chest.

In the defective Guidant devices, a special seal originally designed to protect the electronic workings could conceivably allow leaked moisture to permeate the delicate insides. These are the particular models affected in the Pulsar Max II line:

Guidant Pulsar Max II 1180
Guidant Pulsar Max II 1181
Guidant Pulsar Max II 1280

Due to the potential of critical failure, it's important to talk to your doctor immediately if you or someone you love has one of these units and has suffered from shortness of breath, dizziness, lightheadedness, or prolonged fast heart rate.
