Herbicides and Pesticides

Human beings have used many means over the centuries to protect themselves and their foodstuffs from harmful organisms and animals. Many of the first herbicides and pesticides were naturally occurring chemicals that ancient people found repelled unsuitable plants and animals, but as the years went on scientists discovered that manmade replants worked better than anything nature could provide.

Unfortunately, these scientists s rarely considered the long term impacts of these chemicals on the environment, the people who used the chemicals, and the people who consumed the protected organisms. Many long term studies began to show that widespread use of these chemicals could cause many problems, including poisoning, birth defects, and environmental pollution. Many people who suffered because of herbicides and pesticides never realized their conditions until it was far too late.

Pesticide Poisoning

Pesticides are designed to kill unwanted organisms to protect crops of human populations. Pests such as locusts and rodents have plagued humanity for millennia, but only the scientific advances of the last century have truly enabled people to protect themselves from the scourge of vermin.

Unfortunately, the same scientists who sought to protect people and crops often caused more harm than good. Many of the chemicals used in pesticides were immediately toxic to the pests, but were also harmful to people over repeated use over a long period of time. People who were in constant contact with pesticides developed a number of serious medical conditions, and many eventually died.

Herbicide Posioning

While many plants are beneficial to the survival of humanity, there are many natural organisms that prey on the natural weakness of the plants. Ancient peoples were greatly at the whim of nature when it came to the condition of their crops, but modern scientists greatly advanced understanding of what chemicals harm dangerous plants and weeds but leave favored ones alone.

Unfortunately, these same scientists failed to recognize some of the dangers of their products. While many of these chemicals appear initially safe, most of them can cause serious long term health problems if used over an extended period of time. Poisoning can take many forms, including birth defects, cancer, and fertility issues.

Pesticide Side Effects

Pesticides have been used for centuries to eliminate unwanted animals and organisms in order to protect people, livestock, and crops. Most of the pesticides used in these early days were naturally derived, and as such presented little direct impact on the people who used them.

Unfortunately, as science developed more sophisticated pesticides they did not take in to account the long term affects of these chemicals on the environment and surrounding human populations. Some common side effects of pesticide poisoning include cancer, birth defects, and fertility problems.

Herbicide Side Effects

Herbicides are only intended to cause harm to harmful vegetation such as weeds, unwanted, or alien plants that can interfere with the growth of wanted crops. Some of these chemicals are selective, while others eliminate every plant in an area to clear ground for further cultivation.

Unfortunately many of these herbicides leave residual chemicals on the plants they protect, which in term can cause serious harm in the humans who work with them or consume them. Some of these side effects include birth defects, genetic disorders, cancer, and fertility problems.
