Yamaha Rhino Rollover Accidents

The Rhino, introduced in 2003 by the Yamaha Motor Corporation, is believed to be responsible for a handful of deaths and several serious accidents. Its design has proven to be faulty and prone to rollover crashes, even at minimum speeds.

Though Yamaha has yet to take responsibility for a defective product they have added the following updated information as part of the Rhinos owner’s manual:

• Steering Information – They have added information regarding ATV handling and how to properly steer a vehicle that a driver believes is in danger of rolling.
• Safety Additions – Yamaha has offered to install passenger handles, as well as small plastic doors free of charge on currently owned Rhinos in order to discourage operators from placing arms and legs outside the ATV when a rollover accident occurs.
• Rollover Advising – Yamaha has also informed operators that, in the event of a rollover, arms and legs should be kept inside the ATV until movement has stopped as several severed and maimed limbs have been the result of such accidents.

Each Rhino purchaser has been sent an updated owner’s manual, in addition to a letter dated September 11, 2006, addressing the continual causes that are allegedly associated with the faulty design of the ATV. It is believed the Rhino was erroneously designed in that it has a very narrow wheel base in proportion to its height, making it “top-heavy.” Its compact nature, and high center of gravity has raised several questions regarding it as a defective product.

Despite consumer complaints related to the Rhino, it is still available for purchase and has not been recalled.
