When Guidant announced a voluntary recall of many of its popular Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators on July 17 th, 2005, it included the Renewal 3 AVT and Renewal 4 AVT ICDs. 18,000 of these types of devices were already in use in the United States at the time, but due to a programming error they may not work properly. No deaths or serious injuries have been reported due to the error.
The Renewal 3 AVT and Renewal 4 AVT ICDs are smaller than normal Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators so as to be less visible under the skin of smaller or thinner people. Under ideal conditions the ICD AVT assures the heart will beat properly to ensure that enough blood will circulate throughout the body. When the device malfunctions it can no longer prevent the heart from entering into potentially fatal arrhythmias.
Guidant recommends that any people with the Renewal 3 AVT and Renewal 4 AVT ICDs report to their doctors immediately. You may only need a small change in the memory program of your ICD, but this can only be handled in your doctor’s office. Although no one has died as a consequence of the flaw, there is a small chance that you may incur serious injury if the defect is not repaired.
If you or someone you know and love have a Renewal 3 AVT or Renewal 4 AVT ICD you need to contact your doctor immediately. Once your have protected your health you need to consult a lawyer. You should not have to be another victim of corporate irresponsibility that enriches millionaires at the price of your health and piece of mind. Take action now!
