Defective Medical Devices
Defective Medical Devices and Injuries
The complex nature of medical devices in the 21st century is often reflected in the amount of times they fail while performing their function. Some of the most commonly failing medical devices include:
- Orthopedic (joint screws, rods and plates)
- Cosmetic (penile, breast, and chin implants)
- Cardiology (pacemakers, artificial heart valves and vascular stints)
- Auxiliary devices (catheters and tubing)
- Contraceptive devices (IUDs)
- Surgical tools
Other times implants or therapeutic equipment fail to deliver on the promise of rehabilitation, and are capable of, and do sometimes establish more harm than benefit. In some cases, these devices actually elongate the healing process, and can lead to further painful and expensive treatments or procedures. Tragically, these defects if not remedied in a proper and timely manner can sometimes serve as a catalyst to fatality.
